2014. Mobile application (UI Design).
Designed low and high fidelity mockups for the United Nations Emergency Alerts mobile application that pushes notifications to UN staff and their families in the event of an emergency.
My role: Design front-end mockups of the app to hand off to the iOS/Android developer.
THE CHALLENGE
Design a system that allows regional United Nations hubs to push out notifications to UN Staff and their families in the event of an emergency through a mobile app.
DESIGN
The app was designed to be simple and straightforward. It had 3 main sections: 1) the list of notifications/news that was being pushed, 2) a section to manage which geographic location/s you would like to receive notifications for, and a resources page that linked to websites with more detailed information. Administrators pushed new notifications from a linked content management system that also fed notifications into other UN systems.
I began by creating paper prototypes, and tested it on several users, paying close attention to how intuitive the app and navigation menu were.
Following the paper prototypes, I created high-fidelity mockups. These were then handed to our mobile developer to build. We then tested the initial build on five users in various UN duty stations around the world.
Based on user testing feedback, it was determined that a help section needed to be added where users were given more information on how to set up their notifications and manage which locations they received notifications for.
DEPLOYMENT
The app was then deployed to seven UN global headquarters locations with plans for rollout to all UN locations in the field.
